SriLankan Airlines featured ‘Mathaka’, it’s latest up-cycled lifestyle accessory range at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion week – Sri Lanka, last Friday on 10th December 2021 at the Colombo Innovation Towers. SriLankan collaborate with Ms. Lonali Rodrigo of House of Lonali’ s, the talented local eco-designer, to design and manufacture the products which took to the runway of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. This novel project signifies the Airlines’ commitment to environment whilst setting an example of the importance of preserving resources and re-using materials.

‘Mathaka’ features an exclusive range of designer lifestyle products, entirely made from parts of waste material, consist of discarded uniforms and aircraft interior such as seat covers, curtains and many other verities of discards. Travel bags, wallet, books, key tags, jewellery, and many more exciting designer items are yet to be presented in days to come. In terms of sustainable goals, ‘Mathaka’ project fulfils 5 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), such as Reducing Poverty, Responsible consumption and Production, Climate action, Life on Land and Partnerships.

The collaboration with House of Lonali, the leading eco-designer and developer of upcycle products in Sri Lanka, SriLankan, looking forward to producing many exciting products & accessories which will be beneficial in all aspects of sustainability and economics to the airline. The forthcoming products and accessory range will be available as the Airline’s corporate giveaways, as duty-free on board and on selected locations for sale as memorabilia for the staff & public. All products are 100% environmentally friendly while we are looking forward for an excited journey ahead.

SriLankan Airlines, as the national carrier is always looking towards innovative and novel solutions for tackling climate change and ‘Mathaka’ is one such innovative solution. Being part of the solution and as a pioneer in the region for aviation sustainability, SriLankan Airlines have committed its operations towards to inculcate ‘Planet friendly SriLankan’ attitude and propel its efforts towards the global initiative, NetZero2050.
