Traveling with Children and Infants | What is the classification for Adult, Young Adult, Child, and Infant?

Young adults (12-15 years of age and before reaching the 16th birthday)
These bookings must include an adult when booking online. Young adults can travel alone but these flights can only be booked through our Global Contact Center or at your nearest ticket office

Children (under 12 years and between age 2 and 11 years)
Cannot travel alone and these bookings must include an adult.

Infants (under 2 years of age)
These bookings must include one adult for every infant when booking online. This is because infants are seated on an adult’s lap instead of getting their own seats. Please contact us via our Global Contact Center or through your nearest ticket office.

Other than the United Kingdom and few selected destinations, when you make an online booking you will not see the “Young Adult” passenger type. Instead, all the passengers above 12 years will be considered as adults.

Traveling with Children and Infants | What is a bassinet and how to use it?

An airplane bassinet seat is a small bed for infants these are also known as sky cots, baskets, and cots. They are limited in number and offered based on availability on first come first serve basis.

The bassinets are generally fixed to the bulkhead wall (the wall behind the galley, or toilets or another cabin).

If you have reserved a bassinet seat, always make it a best practice to check at check-in or bag drop if the bassinet is correctly reserved and available.

The bassinet will be set up once the plane has taken-off from the ground and when the seat belt sign has been switched off. You can seek the assistance of a crew member to set up the bassinet.

If there is any turbulence, infants must be removed from the bassinet and secured on their adult’s lap using the infant seat belt.

Traveling with Children and Infants | Getting a bassinets for infants

Depending on the type of aircraft operating the flight, there is a limited number of bassinets available on board. You can order a bassinet through our Global Contact Center or at your nearest ticket office. Bassinets will be provided based on the below criteria

  • For the infants who are still not able to sit up unassisted.
  • For infants who weigh above, 16kg bassinets cannot be provided.
  • The infant should be able to fit into the bassinet. The legs should not be extending out of the bassinet. (our bassinet size is approximately 24” X 12” X 8”).
  • When in use, the Infant shall be secured using the bassinet restraints.
  • The bassinet shall not be fixed during taxi, take-off, and landing. For safety reasons, they can only be used once the aircraft is airborne and seat belt signs have been switched off. If the aircraft experiences turbulence and the seatbelt signs have been switched on, infants must be removed from the bassinet and secured on their adult’s lap using the infant seat belt.

Traveling with Children and Infants | How can I get a bassinet reserved on a codeshare flight?

SriLankan Airlines will be providing the bassinet seat for the flights operated by SriLankan Airlines. For the codeshare flights, you may have to contact the operating airline to arrange and to reserve a bassinet.
